China’s largest cargo drone successfully completed its maiden flight over the weekend, while a new helicopter taxi service began operations on a 100-km route to Shanghai.
The twin-engine cargo drone, developed by Sichuan Tengden Sci-tech Innovation Co, can carry up to 2 metric tons. Its inaugural flight in Sichuan lasted 20 minutes. The drone has a wingspan of 16.1 meters and is slightly larger than a Cessna 172.
This test follows a June flight by AVIC’s HH-100 cargo drone, which carries 700 kg and has a flight radius of 520 km. AVIC plans to test its larger TP2000 model next year.
China is expanding its low-altitude economy, forecasting a $279 billion industry by 2030. Commercial drone deliveries are already underway, with firms like Phoenix Wings delivering fresh fruit across regions.
Additionally, Shanghai NewSky Heli Co has launched a manned helicopter service from Kunshun to Shanghai Pudong Airport. Starting August 18, this route will cut travel time to 20 minutes, with an estimated 30,000 passengers annually.
